the concept of good vs bad art is subjective, If an artist is satisfied and happy with their work, who's to say otherwise. I've watched all of your videos and your help with technique is very much appreciated. A good example is when Monet and Renoir were painting plein air together, Renoir commented thst Monet's work would be amazing after he finished it back in his studio, Monet replied "It is finished".... ta da! the birth of impressionism. Outsider art is another great example

Can you recommend a video on watercolor beard. I'm sitting now with a portrait but struggle. In watercolour you work from light to dark which is the opposite than acrylics in this video. Thanks anyway I always learn something new. Regards from Port Elizabeth South Africa. Berto Mostert

Love this video! Could you make a video for artist looking to transition from digital to traditional? I've been a digital artist for 8 years, and considerate myself an "intermediate" when it comes to understanding the fundamentals of painting (composition, form, light, color). However I have grown interested in oil paints again because I've started to feel like the screen "blocks" me from fully interacting with my art. I've watched a few of your videos already and it has been super helpful! However I still struggle with understanding how to approach certain things that are automated in digital art. I struggle with building from thin to thick because my digital brush is always thick. I also don't understand when to thin my paints with paint thinner, or with oil. I struggle with understanding what my layers should look like, as layers have a completely different function in digital. And lastly I struggle with capturing saturated colors. Digital painting really allows you to push color because ALL of the colors are right at your finger tips. However mixing paints almost always darkens or desaturates the paint. Is the only true to way to maintain saturation with paint is to not mix a color fresh out of the tube? Sorry for the long comment! I've really been enjoying diving into your channel!

Do you have any videos or tutorials on oiling out a finished oil painting? Just watched another artist oil out his painting with linseed oil. I am trying to achieve the rich, high gloss look that vintage paintings sometimes have.

This is a HUGE help! I do need help with flesh color values and you just solved that for me. I'll pre mix values side by side on the pallet as you said, but also make charts with pre-mixed flesh colors to reference. Thanks. And thanks for the information about saving pre-mixed colors in sealed bottles. I would like to paint quick color portraits to sell, from customer's reference photos. So if I can pre-mix flesh colors ahead of time, that will help me paint faster and make more money for my time. I'm a good graphite portrait artist but now I want to work in color, specially oils since they allow more time to adjust and blend colors. Thanks again!

WOW, a 'penny drop' moment. You saying the head is just a ball and has darker/lighter values made me realise why you said in one of your videos " If you can paint this, you can paint anything. (An Apple)." If I can paint a sphere with shadows, cast shadows and reflections I should improve my portrait efforts (Duh) Another excellent video. I listened to you and bought Winsor and Newton Winton and I am so dissatisfied with the low quality and low pigment of these paints, I wouldn't recommend them to students as they low quality of these paints may discourage the students, It would be great if you wouldn't promote and affiliate low quality brands

I started doing this with pictures using the edit tool on my phone on things I want to paint and it helps me figure out shading ahead of time with what works and what doesn’t.

Not having to adhere strictly to the picture is actually liberating. I always begin with an image in front of me, but then I put it aside and continue by recalling what I saw and what I want to convey.

Whats with the Assaro head eyes?

I have found my tightest portraits are the ones I had the most trouble getting a likeness. Also using a comparator is good for establishing a likeness but can end up kinda jizzless. I love my comparator but there is a time to step away from the comparator
